No repeat of 2021 US final in DC
There will be no rematch of the remarkable 2021 US Open final in the Washington WTA 500 this year.
Whilst Leylah Fernandez battled through a triple tiebreak thriller to beat No. 3 seed Elena Rybakina 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 in a marathon three hours and twelve minutes, Emma Raducanu succumbed to Anna Kalinskaya 4-6, 3-6.
Fernandez was just one game away from defeat before turning the match around and will face Anna Kalinskaya, who holds a 9-2 main draw record in Washington, in Sunday’s final, her first final for more than a year.
This will be a great opportunity for two former WTA top 20 players, Fernandez is currently No. 36 and. Kalinskaya is ranked No. 48 to win the biggest title of their careers in a WTA 500 event.
