Noah takes the wheel as captain at Laver Cup
French great Yannick Noah will take over from Bjorn Borg in 2025 as captain of the Europe side at the Laver Cup, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The last home player to win Roland Garros when he lifted the trophy in 1983 will make his debut at the 2025 San Francisco edition of the Europe v World team event run by Roger Federer’s management company.
Noah joins fellow new appointee Andre Agassi, who was named last week to head the World side.
Noah’s Grand Slam title 37 years ago marked the only time a French man has triumphed at the Paris major.
Noah, a former French Davis Cup captain, won 23 singles titles and 16 doubles titles, with a career high ranking of No.3 in July, 1986 – highest ever for a French male.
He also led French women to the Fed Cup title in 1997 and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2005.
The multi-tasker also enjoyed a career as a pop singer at one point after he hung up his racquet.
“I am truly honored to have been asked to take on the role as Team Europe Captain for the Laver Cup,” he said. “I’ve been out of the game for a while, doing my music, but I am really excited for this new adventure.
“I love team competitions, the emotions they bring, getting to know the guys, how they are on and off the court as people – it will be great. I also can’t wait to see Andre again after a couple of decades and to face him on the other side.
“I might have mellowed a bit now, but the competitive side of me is alive forever. I want Team Europe to win!”
