Osaka dumped in Masters upset
2018 Indian Wells Masters winner Naomi Osaka was sent packing on Wednesday from the event, taking a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Camila Osorio in the first round.
The Japanese who once stood atop the rankings until personal problems took her away from the WTA and into decline, was ambushed by her South American opponent for a loss which included more than 40 unforced errors.
Osorio, ranked 53rd to the 56 of four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka, had not competed since January in Singapore following a second-round Australian Open defeat and ensuing abdominal injury.
The Colombian winner lost in the first round here in 2021 and 2022.
