Pegula falls in Tokyo final to Kudermetova

Veronika Kudermetova sprang a 7-5, 6-1 surprise on world No. 4 Jessica Pegula to win the WTA Tokyo title on Sunday.
The eighth seed needed just under 90 minutes to defeat the second seed who won the Montreal title in August;
Kudermetova claimed the second trophy of her career after Charleston two years ago; victory in Japan ended a four-final loss streak since her Charleston success.
The victory cemented the end of a loss streak, with the player having won only three matches in her last six events prior to Tokyo.

Fragile Draper quits Tokyo quarters

Brittle Brit Jack Draper has had to quit another match due to illness, with the national No. 1 exiting in the quarter-finals of the Japan Open 7-5, 2-1 to hand Ugo Humbert a victory.
Draper’s fitness has appeared fragile for several months, with the ATP No. 20 lasting for 62 minutes before throwing in the towel against his 18th-ranked French opponent.
Draper was treated on court at the Ariake Colosseum on his abdomen; he tried to resume the match but was unable to carry on.
London’s US Open semi-finalist has experienced several fitness episodes this season, including vomiting three times on court during his semi in New York three weeks ago against Jannik Sinner.
Draper was also ill after winning the Australian open first round and retired injured last March in an Acapulco semi-final against Alex de Minaur.

Cilic celebration short-lived with Tokyo loss

Marin Cilic’s celebrations after winning his first title in three years at the weekend were brought to a screeching halt by old rival Kei Nishikori in a Thursday first-round match in Tokyo.
The Croat who triumphed in Hangzhou was done and dusted in the first round at the Ariake Colosseum, eliminated -4, 3-6, 6-3 by the Japanese.
The match was a reversal of the 2014 US Open final, won by Cilic.
Former world No. 4 Nishikori has made yet another successful return from long-term injury this season; he heads the overall series with Cilic 10-6.
“There were a couple of special moments for me. Playing here is special for me. I haven’t played here in a long time,” Nishikori said.
“We have played many great matches. I know I’ve had a tough time in the past two years and I have been in the same situation.
“I was happy to play against Marin and very happy to win.”
Nishikori won the home title in Tokyo in 2012 and 2014, when he was in his prime and reigning as Asia’s top player
His win over Cilic took just over two hours as he profitted from 37 unforced errors from his veteran European opponent.

Shelton triumphs in Tokyo for first career title

Ben Shelton earned the first title of his career on Sunday with a 7-5, 6-1 hammering of Aslan Karatsev to triumph at the ATP event in Tokyo.
The 21-year-old US Open semi-finalist was helped by 20 unforced errors from his opponent in the title match of the 500 series tournament which lasted 84 minutes.
“That meant a lot to me and my team,” the winner said. “We’ve been working really hard since the beginning to build my game and win titles.
“I’ve made some deep runs lately. The great champions, they win titles, they don’t just get to finals.
“To be able to do it for one week, put together five matches in a row in Tokyo is really special.”
The No. 19 will rise four spots in the rankings after his breakthrough success at the Ariake Colosseum. Shelton is also in the running for a place in the ATP season final for under 21 players.
“I’m really looking forward to this tail-end stretch of the year, it’s a great opportunity for me,” he said. “I’m looking forward to finishing the season strong.”
Shelton finished with 18 winners and backed up the Tokyo title for Americans a year after Taylor Fritz took the honours.
