Raducanu closing in on Petchey as next Coach

Published

on

Emma Raducanu has had seven full time coaches since she started her professional career in the summer of 2021

This does not include several interim coaches Nigel Sears, Andrew Richardson, Torben Beltz, Dmitry Tursunov, Sebastian Sachs, Nick Cavaday, and Vlado Platenik

She and her team are apparently in discussions with Mark Petchey, Andy Murray’s former coach, about appointing him full time.

The pair did work together during the Covid pandemic in 2020 at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton.

Raducanu’s most impressive run since her shock win in the 2021 US Open came under Petchey’s temporary  renewed influence as she reached her first ever final eight of a WTA 1000 event  in Miami last month.

It was also the most wins she had picked up in a single tournament since her US Open title.

One possible sticking point to a permanent arrangement is that Petchey currently has a role as a commentator for the  Tennis Channel.

Badosa aims for back injury return by Madrid

Published

on

Paula Badosa has given herself less than a month to be fit for the Madrid Masters after withdrawing from Miami with a recurring back problem.

The Spaniard who once touched second in the world retired before her fourth-round match in Florida more than a week ago.

She is hoping to be back on court when Madrid begins in three weeks.

The 27-year-old described her injury as “small hernia that has moved from the vertebra, but I’m being treated for the best treatments.

“My goal is to be back in Madrid.”

This year’s Australian Open semi-finalist added: “I’m doing well. I’m trying to take things positively, put things in perspective, and I’m doing fine.

“Physically? Well, I’ve had every test possible.

“This time I was more scared than I should have been because it was on the opposite side.

“I’ve always had discomfort on the right side, and now it’s on the left. I was worried it was another stress fracture, but fortunately it isn’t.”

Sinner training ban plan scuppered

Published

on

Jannik Sinner’s hopes of skirting an official ban on training until April 13 has been dealt a bureaucratic blow, with the world No. 1 unable to hit an official practice court in the coming weeks.

As part of a legal deal struck with anti-doping bosses after two positive – but non-culpable – tests, the Italian is unable to compete on the ATP until early May and can only resume training in mid-April.

Team Sinner originally thought that training at the non-affiliated Monte Carlo country club before the kickoff date would be allowed.

But local officials delivered the bad news that the prestige club is officially linked with both the Monegasque and French federations, ruling out the Mediterranean venue as a training ground for Sinner for another five weeks.

Sinner is currently due to miss four Masters 1000 dates – Indian Wells, Miami Monte Carlo and Madrid.

He could make a comeback as early as the Rome Masters in early May.

Rublev drops Draper to win 2nd Doha trophy

Published

on

Andrey Rublev drove home a 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 victory over Brit Jack Draper to win his second career title at the ATP Doha event on Saturday.

The champion who also took the honours here five years ago, now owns 17 career titles and has beaten Draper in all four of their matches.

The fifth seed had not won a Tour title since the Madrid Masters last May.

“It’s the first ever title I’ve won twice, I’m really happy,” Rublev said after his two-hour effort.

“Both of us were really tired after two three-set matches that finished late. We were exhausted and it was difficult.”

But it did not go totally his way: “When I lost the second set, I let it go and started to play more freely. I was really good mentally and didn’t let frustration get over me.

“I was able to restart and was able to play at the same intensity. That’s the most important thing.”

Draper will rise to 12th in the rankings on Monday

While the first two sets were competitive, Draper’s fitness after several seasons of injuries made a difference in the deciding set with the Brit appearing to tire.

The finalist called his effort “an amazing week. Andrey was too good today. We played some tough matches this week and in the third set he was just a bit too strong for me.

“I’m really proud of my efforts this week. Every day, I wake up and try to improve, so it’s a testament to my hard work I suppose.”

Both players move onto next week’s 500 series in Dubai, with Rublev taking the third seeding to Draper’s seventh.
