Emma Raducanu advanced in Montreal on Monday as the Briton advances towards a likely seeding at the US Open.

The 2021 US Open champion whose career is on the mend after several seasons of injury and poor form, reached the second round at the WTA event in the Quebec capital, defeating Gabriela Ruse 6-4, 6-2.

Coach Mark Petchey, whose trial period was reassessed after Wimbledon, was back in the player box for the win in just over 90 minutes.

Raducanu currently ranks 33rd and stands just one place away from a seeding at the New York Grand Slam starting in a month.

She reached the semi-finals last weekend in Washington as the North American hardcourt season began.

The Briton had to save five break points in the opening game against Ruse but found her rhythm quickly by breaking for 3-2 and earning the opening set in 41 minutes as she won six games in succession and broke to start the second set.

Raducanu won into a match with American Payton Stearns.
