Raducanu returns to the qualifying trenches
Emma Raducanu will step back into the minor-league world of qualifying after being handed a lifeline by organisers of the WTA 500 event in Abu Dhabi.
Britain’s former US Open winner who has parted with her sixth coach, was given a wild card entry with qualies starting within hours in the UAE capital.
Raducanu won her unlikely New York trophy in 2021 from a qualifying start, an unheard-of achievement at the majors.
The 22-year-old travelled to Abu Dhabi after a three-set thrashing this week in the Singapore opening round after reaching the Australian Open third round.
British media report she has not played qualifying since New York four years ago.
Raducanu is currently without a coach after Nick Cavaday quit due to health concerns. She played the Grand Slam in Melbourne with her fitness trainer guiding her preparation.
