Rublev takes frustrations out on his knee

Out-of-control Andrey Rublev smashed his knee seven times with his racquet during Tuesday’s Wimbledon first-round loss – but said that strict protection of the grass was to blame.

The world No. 6 lost to Argentine first-time winner Francisco Comesana in the opening round and exploded into anger after losing the first set.

But the volatile player whose outbursts are becoming a regular occurrence as a run of miserable clay form followed him onto the grass, said he used his body as a target due to strict rules against damaging the All England Club lawns.

“I would not do it if I was able to hit the racquet on the floor (grass),” said the player who was disqualified in Dubai last February for getting in the face of a linesman over a call.

“Because we’re not allowed to hit the grass… I don’t know why in that moment, I couldn’t take it any more.

“I needed to let emotions out. Everything is fine.”

Rublev said that while he’s trying to improve his on-court demeanour, his rehab does not go so far as re-viewing his transgressions on match videos.

“I never watch those kinds of videos. … improving yourself  – It takes process and it takes time.”
