Rune tweener sinks Tsitsipas in IW
Holger Rune landed a spectacular second-set tweener which sucked the life out of any hopes for Stefanos Tsitsipas, with the Greek going down 6-4, 6-4 in a Tuesday fourth-round win at the Indian Wells Masters.
The Dane saved the first of two break points in the eighth game of the set as he completed the desperation trick shot, forcing recent Dubai champion Tsitsipas to try and answer from his baseline with one of his own.
But that effort went wrong, with Rune saving the second break point seconds later for a 5-3 lead. two games later, it was over, with Rune reaching a Thursday quarter-final against Tallon Griekspoor.
“I felt very good, I played extremely well from start to finish,” the Danish winner said. “I was committed to my game plan and I stayed composed; it was a cool battle.”
Rune advanced to the last eight in 90 minutes after play was stopped four minutes into the opening game due to rain and delayed for 50 minutes.
The Dane finished with 22 winners as he reached his ninth quarter-final at the Masters 1000 level.
Defeat ended a run of form for Tsitsipas, who had held serve 42 consecutive times before Rune broke him in the seventh game of the opening set.
