Stan Wawrinka led by a break of serve in both sets but could not hold on as the Swiss veteran went down 6-4, 7-6 (5) to Casper Ruud on Thursday to exhibit in Basel in the second round.

The 40-year-old Wawrinka, a three-time grand Slam champion, was playing the home event for the 18th time but was unable to capitalise on his early margins.

Ruud won his sixth match in a row after lifting the Stockholm title last weekend and held onto his provisional 11th place place in the chase to eight-player November’s ATP Finals in Turin.

The Norwegian reached a quarter-final against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina after victory over Wawrinka which lasted just under two hours.

Wawrinka was treated early in the second set on his back.
