Aryna Sabalenka became the first high-profile casualty at Wimbledon on Monday, with the third seed withdrawing injured before her opening match.

The two-time Australian Open champion quit before her first-round match against  unknown American Emina Bektas.

Sabalenka, who has not played since retiring injured with her problem last month in Berlin, had warned prior to the Wimbledon start that she might not be fit.

“I’ve never dealt with serious injuries in my career. The struggles I’m going through right now, that’s a lot.

“I would say that the past month (has been) really challenging for me. I’ve been fighting through a lot of different pains.”
