The US Open
Serena reportedly keen/not keen to get back in the game,,,,
The smokescreen over a possible – perhaps unlikely – return to tennis by 44 year old Serena Williams got even thicker, with the 23 time Grand Slam singles champion officially cleared for a comeback from February 22.
She looked to have quit the game with a third-round loss at the 2022 US Open.
But since having her second girl and profitting from weight-loss injections as she built her investment and sponsorships portfolio, Williams has suddenly been dropping contrasting hints regarding any possible return to competition.
After failing to deny her full retirement to a US television talk shop, the former great now appears to be heading to at least a partial comeback.
Last month she officially re-entered the player dope-testing pool, meaning she has to provide whereabouts for at least one hour per day every day of the year to facilitate surprise tests.
The winner of her last Grand Slam title nine years ago then posted an apparent denial an hour after the news broke “I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy” before telling the Today Show: “I don’t know, I’m just going to see what happens.”
Williams has said for the past four years that she was taking time away from sport while fending off growing retirement rumours.
Any future competition programme remains a mystery.
