Shaky Sinner out of Cincinnati

Jannik Sinner withdrew on Sunday from next week’s ATP Cincinnati masters, with the tournament advising the loss of the drawcard on social media.

The world No. 1 who has not played since winning Wimbledon a month ago over Alexander Zverev now looks to be questionable for the start of the US Open.

Sinner in recent days was reported as making medical visits to Italian specialists with no details made public.

The 24-year-old played the Cincinnati final a year ago but lost to Carlos Alcaraz – also missing Cinci through injury – when he retired after five games of the final.

“After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati,” Sinner said in a statement.

“My right knee has been bothering me and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept that I’m not ready to compete yet.

“I’m very disappointed not to be able to play in Cincinnati and wish Bob (Moran) and his whole team a great and successful event. I can’t wait to be back next year and I’m now focusing on getting ready for the US Open.”

With 2024 winner Sinner and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz (right wrist) now both out with injury, Roland Garros champion Zverev takes the top seeding in the final big event prior to the US Open.
