Sinner and Berrettini guide Italy into semi-finals

Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berretini, substituted by Team Captain Filippo Volandri  to play instead of the originally nominated doubles pairing of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori  beat Argentina’s Andres Molteni and Maximo Gonzalez in the deciding doubles match in front of a boisterous crowd to set up a repeat of last year’s Davis Cup final against Australia.

Jannik Sinner, who only arrived in Malaga on Tuesday after winning the ATP Finals title in Turin, was in impressive form in his singles victory despite his team being 1-0 down.

Once he stepped on to the court, there was little doubt that the tie wouldn’t go the full distance.

He followed up his singles win singles by  pairing up with Matteo Berrettini to clinch the decisive point in the doubles with a 6-4 7-5 victory

Italy are hoping  to become only the sixth nation to retain the Davis Cup since the final stage was introduced 52 years ago, and first since the Czech Republic in 2013.
