Sinner completes another Italy Davis success
Jannik Sinner finished off the Netherlands on Sunday to lead Italy into a second consecutive Davis Cup triumph with a 2-0 finals victory in Malaga.
The runaway world No. 1 completed a massively successful season comprising a pair of Grand Slam trophies (Melbourne and New York), plus six more at the ATP level including last week’s AFP Finals.
Sinner polished off victory 7-6 (2), 6-2 over Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor to hand the trophy to tennis power Italy.
The Italians become the first to win back-to-back titles since the Czech Republic 2012 and 2013. Italy have won 10 of 11 ties in the series, with the Dutch scoring their only victory 101 years ago.
Sinner is the first player since Roger Federer in 2005 to complete an entire season without losing a match in straight sets; the Italian finished with a 73-6 record.
He last lost a match on October 2 to Carlos Alcaraz in the Beijing final and has since won 14 on the trot.
Italy began with a 6-4, 6-2 result from Matteo Berrettini over Botic van de Zandschulp.
Berrettini, with three clay titles this season, did not face a break point in victory.
Against Griekspoor, Sinner needed four match points to get the job won and clinched the trophy for Italy.
The No. 1 secured the opening set in a tiebreaker and came from a break down in the second to ice the deal.
