Sinner not thrilled by marathon Cincinnati schedule

The bloated 12-day schedule of the Cincinnati Masters may not have the full endorsement of Jannik Sinner, with the top seed admitting on Wednesday that he prefers the old school seven-day format.

“We (top players) cannot control everything,” the Italian said prior to his start at the event which makes an oddball Thursday kickoff.

“The fans now have two weekends to hopefully watch some good tennis. That is exactly what we need in this sport.”

But the world No 1 also warned: “I would prefer a one-week event, it’s something that I like.

“But it’s OK, I’m here and I’m very happy.”

Sinner voted with his feet by skipping the equally expanded Toronto Masters,  which winds up on Thursday the same day as the Cincy start in a calendar clash of massive proportions.

Organisers of both event are salivating at the chance for increased revenue while top 10 players also including Novak Djokovic and Alex de Minaur have all lamented the expanded version of the events.
