Sinner notches 12th straight win with Beijing comeback
Jannik Sinner stepped onto court for the first time since his US Open title, with the top seed forced into a fightback to reach the second round of the China Open on Thursday.
The hybrid event which has been extended past the normal time frame by tennis bosses to somehow encompass nearly two weeks, was won by the Italian a year ago.
Sinner emerged from his opening match with a 12th straight victory as he defeated Nicolas Jarry 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The world No. 1 produced just 11 unforced errors in just under two hours as he advanced on hardcourt in the capital.
“He played good tennis,” Sinner said after earning his 56th win of the season.
“In the first set I was struggling to return his serve and he broke me. I just tried to stay there mentally.
“The first round at any tournament is never easy and playing against him is very tough.
“But I’m happy about the performance and how I ended the match.”
