Sinner storms into semis; Fritz tags along

Jannik Sinner crushed Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday to enter the semi-finals of the ATP Finals with a perfect 3-0 group record in Turin.

The world No. 1 who has not dropped a set heading into the knockout stage needed just 73 minutes to defeat Medvedev.

His victory also assures Taylor Fritz a place in the final four after the American defeated Alex de Minaur 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 earlier. 

Group matches wrap up on Friday with Carlos Alcaraz facing undefeated Alexander Zverev and Norway’s Casper Ruud taking on Andrey Rublev.

Sinner is bidding for an eighth title this season after winning the Australian and US Opens.

The home favourite in northern Italy was helped by 30 unforced errors form Medvedev, who was broken three times.

“I didn’t really change a thing,” Sinner – who knew he was in the semis before stepping onto the court – said. “But I’m always trying to find ways to improve as a player

“I want to win as many matches as I can. Daniil and I know each other well, I was ready to see what he would do.”

The Italian from the German-speaking  Sudtirol region added: “I know what I’ve achieved this year, I came onto the court with a good mindset.

“I have a great team and beautiful people supporting me every day. We are trying to prepare in the best way possible for each match.

“Playing good tennis here this week is important.”

 Sinner’s perfect run this week nudged him ahead 8-7 in his career series with Medvedev; the Italian has finished the group stage here undefeated for a second straight edition.

He moved level with Zverev on an ATP-leading 68 match wins this season.
