Sinner subdues Medvedev in Shanghai
Jannik Sinner levelled his career record with Daniil Medvedev at seven win apiece as the top seed stopped his struggling opponent 6-1, 6-4 on Thursday to book into the Shanghai masters semi-finals.
It’s the fifth time this season that the world No. 1 has reached the final four at the 1000 level.
Fifth seed Medvedev was treated for a shoulder problem in the second set but Sinner did not let the pause for a physio distract his 83-minute winning effort.
“It felt like he had a bit of shoulder pain and couldn’t hit his forehand as well as he wished to. Hopefully he can recover as fast as possible,” Sinner said.
” I’m very happy how I handled today and this match.”
The 23-year-old Italian who owns Australian and US Open titles this season, called victory: “a great match, a great battle.”
Last season, Sinner began reversing a run of six ATP losses to Medvedev and has now won their last eight matched
The top seed lost only three points on serve in the opening set and needed only one break in the second to clinch victory with nine aces among 26 winners.
Sinner leads the ATP with 63 wins in 2024 and is well on his way to claiming the year-end top ranking.
