Sinner takes US Open lessons to China
Jannik Sinner will return to tennis at the China Open this week nearly three weeks after his US Open finals loss to rival Carlos Alcaraz, with the Italian hoping to bring some fresh perspective onto the court.
The Italian who dropped to second in the world as a result of his four-set loss, said he and his team have used the defeat as a learning experience.
“We’ve been reflecting a lot on that final,” Sinner said prior to his Beijing start against former US Open champion Marin Cilic.
“We are working on new things, we’re changing a lot of small things.
“It’s just a question of time. I don’t know how much I’m able to put lessons into practice) in the actual match court because one thing is practice and one thing is match. Let’s see.”
But this season’s Australian Open and Wimbledon winner added: “I’m very motivated. It’s great to work on something new, then we see how this ends up.
“We always try to move forward. One step in front is always better than two steps back. Let’s see what we can do.”
Alcaraz, headlining this week at the Japan Open, owns a 10-5 record in his series with Sinner, who owns four Grand Slam titles to six for the 22-year-old Spaniard.
Sinner is defending the Chinese title in the capital, standing 37-5 on the season.
