Slowly, slowly the key to Sinner recovery

Jannik Sinner coach Darren Cahill has given a cautious update on the health of the world No. 1 after the Italian lasted just five games in Monday’s Cincinnati Masters final before retiring with illness.

The 24-year-old made it to the US Open which begins on Sunday but obviously withdrew from the exhibition-style mixed doubles event played over two days this week and won by mixed defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori.

Top-seed Sinner begins his title defence in the first round against Czech Vit Kopriva.

Cahill, who has long had a second career as an ESPN commentator, gave an update of sorts on the state of his man.

“I spoke briefly with him, he  was feeling a little better.

“He’ll rest, that’s the plan, and I hope he can get on the court on Thursday and start hitting some balls. We’re confident he’ll be fine.”
