Stan crowns Perth debut with marathon win
Stan Wawrinka needed nearly three and a half hours on Saturday to kick start his retirement season, with the 40-year-old sending Switzerland to an untouchable 2-0 lead over France at the United Cup.
With the three-time Grand Slam singles champion set to wrap up his career after more than two decades on court, every 2026 match is critical.
The veteran joined 11th-ranked teammate Belinda Bencic as a winner after the former Olympic gold medalist started the tie 6-2, 6-4 over Leolia Jeanjean.Wawrinka then worked through the heat of a Western Australia summer afternoon to defeat Arthur Rinderknech 5-7, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) to clinch the tie.
Wawinka is playing in Perth for his first time ever and showed he’s ready to fight as he took down an opponent a decade younger on first match point.
“It’s amazing to have such support on my first time here,” Wawrinka said. “After 20 years on the Tour it’s amazing to finally play here.
“Today’s match was tough but I’m happy we could start 2-0.
“I’ve always dreamed of being part of a team,” added the 2014 Davis Cup champion.
Bencic wasted no time in her defeat of Jeanjean but overcame a niggle as she was broken while serving for victory up a set and 5-3.
‘The last game was tricky with the sun. I should have done better, but I will work out a solution for the next match.
The Swiss are also grouped with European neighbors Italy at the 18-nation pre-Australian Open event.
