Svitolina calls an early halt to a second season
Elina Svitolina on Wednesday ended her second season in a row earlier than planned due to injury, with the Ukrainian’s last match a US Open third round loss to Coco Gauff 12 days ago.
The crisis scenario was similar to the end of Svitolina’s 2023 campaign when she wrapped up early with a fractured ankle.
The No. 28 who won her last title at Strasbourg in May, 2023, called her most recent halt after returning to Europe with husband Gael Monfils from New York.
“I had a good season, but unfortunately it’s already over because I got injured,” she told the Ukrain’s sport.ua website.
“Finishing the year in the top 30 is a good result considering that I was injured most of the time. The Olympics went well, unfortunately I didn’t bring home the medal but I had some nice victories.”.
The player who once reached third in the world added: “I didn’t play as I wanted in the tournaments after the Games because I was already injured.
“I wanted more, I wanted to play better, now I will take care of my injuries and I hope to start next season in the best way.”
