Swiatek comes alive with overwhelming Toronto win

Iga Swiatek showed major improvement on Thursday as the six-time Grand Slam winner powered ahead at the Toronto Masters 6-2, 6-1 over Viktorija Golubic.

Swiatek, a former WTA no. 1 now ranked eighth, will be concentrating in her own game as she tries to maintain her record of winning at least one title each August since 2021.

The Pole has dropped just six games in her first two victories at the pre-US Open Canadian event, booking her spot in the fourth round after just 66 minutes.

The winner of 25 matches this season, said she will now go to work on her next challenge.

“Recovery is the most important thing. For sure I’m gonna prepare tactically. We’ll see how the day goes. But no pressure.

“”I’m gonna focus on myself and just chill today.”

Swiss Golubic is something of a one-off, the only player to have defeated Swiatek in the first round of a Grand Slam (Wimbledon, 2019).

“For sure it was a good day, and I’m really happy with the way I played,” Swiatek said. “Even though the first game wasn’t super smooth, I knew I can start from the beginning, and then it went my way and I could find my rhythm.”
