Tsitsipas lets rip on his “narcissistic” tennis parents
Moody Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas has unleashed on his childhood upbringing, sparing no criticism of his “narcissistic” tennis parents in a social media video.
The 26-year-old ranked 11th after a longtime run in the top 10, split with his father and coach Apostolos last April in a blowup at the Montreal Masters.
The arrangement was the only one Tsitsipas had ever known and he let his immediate feeling be known at the time on social media, calling himself “disappointed” with his parent.
Tsitsipas went even farther in his latest Instagram rant: “The past months have been a quiet storm of evolution,” he said after failing to qualify for the year-end ATP Finals for the first time in six years.
“Through flaws, risks, and endless possibility, life reveals its beauty — not in perfection, but in its bold unpredictability. What’s coming? Only time will tell.”
Tsitsipas has a reputation for thinking beyond the surface, with his philosophical posts never failing to attract at least puzzlement.
He then went into a deep dive on his familial problems after being raised by his Greek father and Russian mother.
“The child of a narcissistic parent learns early that love is conditional,” Tsitsipas said in a video.
“They quickly understand they’ll only be loved for what they do, not who they are,” the narrator said.
“They sense their parents cannot meet their emotional needs, so they learn to perform: excelling in sports, academics or becoming their parents’ confidant and emotional support.”
