Untouchable Sinner swarms Zverev to guarantee SF spot

Jannik Sinner dispatched world No. 3 Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday to guarantee himself the first semi-final place at the ATP Finals as he dominated the German.

The second-ranked Italian who won the title in Turin a year ago, earned his 28th consecutive win on indoor hardcourt with his 97-minute success.

Sinner has not lost under a roof since the 2023 Turin final against Novak Djokovic and has progressed this week in straight sets.

The top seed saved all seven break points he faced while breaking the serve of his German opponent once per set.

Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime will square off on Friday for the other semi-final spot to come from Sinner’s group at the year-ender.

“It was a very competitive and close match,” the winner said. “I served well in the important moments.

“I tried to play my best tennis when it mattered the most; today things went my way.”

Sinner came through an early challenge as he held in the seven-minute opening game, firing foru of his 12 aces but also striking four unforced errors before finally holding serve.

He claimed the set with a concluding break of Zverev, who at one point in the second set complained about a courtside advertising hoarding whose lights suddenly went out.

Sinner motored through the second set with a break for 4-2 and closed out the contest. with a winner.

“We both changed tactics during the match,” he said. “We were hitting flat and fast. I’m happy how I was able to return his serve – one of the best in the sport.

“You have to play 100 per cent, things can go either way. I’m excited to be in the semi-finals.”
