US Open 2025 Men’s Day 5
Jannik Sinner destroyed any further upset dreams of 2024 spoiler Alexei Popyrin on Thursday, with the world No. 1 crushing the Aussie 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 to blow into the US Open third round.
A year ago, Popyrin sent then-second seed Novak Djokovic packing at Flushing Meadows in a four-set, third round upset.
But Sinner made sure history did not repeat itself as he dominated in two hours with 26 winners and five breaks of serve.
The 24-year-old has now won 23 straight Grand Slam matches on hardcourt, a total which includes the Open a year ago plus Australia in January.
“I try to play the best tennis that I can,” the winner said. When you are up two sets and a break I try to serve the best I can.
“I felt like we both didn’t serve great. I’m very happy about today but I’m obviously looking to improve the serve.”
Sinner will bid for the fourth round against Denis Shapovalov, who defeated No. 98 Frenchman Valentin Royer 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
The top seed has won his last nine matches in New York and his last 17 sets in hard court Slams; He stands 41-1 in recent matches.
Tenth seed Lorenzo Musetti joined fellow Italian Sinner as a winner, sweeping eight games on the trot from 4-4 in the first set to the end of the second set.
He then made it six more in succession to complete a 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 defeat of David Goffin.
Musetti will play the New York third round for a third time as he continues his turnaround in recent form.
Coming into the major, he has lost five of six matches while dealing with effects of an injury from Roland Garros.
His win over veteran Goffin was his 28th of the season; he finished with 27 winners and 16 unforced errors.
Andrey Rublev booked the third round here for the seventh straight time with his 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (4) defeat of American Tristan Boyer.
Hong Kong qualifier Colemon Wong broke fresh ground for an SAR player with a move into the third round as he plays for the first time in the main draw of a major, the outsider put out Australian Adam Walton 7-6 (5), 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
The Asian will now test himself against Rublev.
Swiss Leandro Riedl, the No. 435, outlasted Argentine Francisco Cerundolo with a massive comeback 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
