US Open 2025 Men’s Day 7
A broken shoelace at a key moment stopped the rot for Jannik Sinner as the top seed took control for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 win over Denis Shapovalov to reach the second week of the US Open on Saturday.
With the sets level at one each, Canadian Shapovalov had a chance to go up a double break in the third set, only to have Sinner’s shoelace snap at a critical moment.
The resulting moments it took to put on fresh shoes gave the Italian a moment of respite, with the world no. 1 returning to the fray a changed player.
Sinner went on a tear, winning nine consecutive games out to 3-0 in the fourth set. The margin of one break was enough to keep the seed in the lead, with Sinner advancing on his first match point after more than three hours.
“It was a very, very tough match,” the winner said. “We have not played for a few years but we’ve both improved.
“I knew I had to play at a high level, I’ happy I managed to win.”
Sinner’s victory was the 24th straight on hardcourts at the Grand Slams for the defending champion here.
:The second week is completely different,” Sinner said of what’s ahead at Flushing Meadows. “I’m still here and I’m looking forward to the next match.
“They are only getting tougher and tougher. This is a very special place for me – I played my first Grand Slam main draw here and won it last year.”
Tenth seed Lorenzo Musetti dominated fellow italian Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-2, 2-0 to roll into the last 16 due to retirement, joining Sinner in the round of 16.
The two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist advanced to his best career showing in New York as a pair of Italians met in the third round of a major for only the third time.
Cobolli, a Wimbledon quarter-finalist and best friend of the man who defeated him, could not go on due to a right arm injury, retiring after 96 minutes
No, 435 Leandro Riedi reached the second week as he played in only his second Grand Slam main draw as Polish opponent Kamil Majchrzak quit their third-round match to hand over a 5-3 win to the Swiss.
Spaniard Jaume Munar reached the second week of a major for the first time in his career as he put out Belgian Zizou Bergs 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.
