Iga Swiatek lost her first set since Wimbledon but made a smooth recovery to dismiss Suza Lamens 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 on Thursday to secure her spot in the US Open third round.
The Polish second seed found herself level with the Dutchwoman after sweeping the opening set in well under half an hour.
But Swiatek calmly began her fightback to victory in the deciding set, breaking twice to run out the winner on the showcase court.
“It wasn’t the easiest match, it got a bit complicated in the second set,” Swiatek said.
“I’m happy that I could reset and start playing better in the third set.”
The winner added: “I wouldn’t say surprised (to lose a set). I kind of let her in after the first set, and she used her chances and she knew what to do with that.
“She deserves the games that she won.”
Two-time champion Naomi Osaka, reconstructing her career after becoming a mother two years ago, beat American Hailey Baptiste 6-3, 6-1 for a return to the third round for the first time in four years.
The four-time Grand Slam titleholder has now won eight of her last nine matches.
Beatriz Haddad Maia booked a return to the third round as she won a battle of look-alikes 6-1, 6-4 victory over Viktorija Golubic.
The 29-year-old Brazilian and her Swiss opponent wore exactly the same kit – white top, pink skirt and each with a white sun visor – making for confusing viewing for spectators on an outside court who had to rely on contrasting shoe colourways.
The 18ht-seeded Haddad Maira won the last four games of the opening set and finished off victory with a solid second set to advance after saving break points as she served for the match.
She came to the court trailing 4-1 in their career series.
Czech Linda Noskova advanced when German opponent Eva Lys retired to hand over a 6-3, 3-0 win after 63 minutes of play.
German Laura Siegemund, 37, defeated Anastasia Zakharova 6-4, 6-2..
