Jessica Pegula rattled off a win into the US Open quarter-finals in 54 minutes on Sunday as the 2024 runner-up delivered a crushing 6-1, 6-2 win over Ann Li.

The third seed beat her American compatriot without stress with a winner up the line on match point to reach the last eight at her home major for the third tie in the last four years.

Li, ranked 58th and a finalist at the pre-Open event in Cleveland, was playing the fourth round of a major for the first time.

“I played her at Roland Garros this year, it was a tough two sets,” Pegula said. “When she’s serving well, she has confidence.

“She came out slower today so I wanted to jump on top and not let her feel comfortable for a second.

“That was my motivation for the entire match. I was moving well today and seeing the ball at the right time.

“I started well and wanted to keep executing.”

Pegula said that her finals loss here a year ago to Aryna Sabalenka does not really figure in her current campaign at Flushing Meadows.

“So much has happened since then. I came in here not playing great and making the second week was a goal. reaching another quarter-final is crazy.

“I know I can find a way to play some more good tennis.”
