Jannik Sinner maintained his march towards a second Grand Slam title of the season as the world No. 1 set up a US Open semi-final with Britain’s Jack Draper.

Italian Sinner defeated 2001 New York champion Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 to win his 21st match of 2024 at the majors and has now reached semi-finals at all four Grand Slams during his career.

He is Italy’s first from the Open era to complete that achievement.

Sinner is already looking ahead to his Friday showdown with Draper, who has not lost a set so far during the fortnight.

“We know each other quite well, it’s gonna be interesting. We played in juniors but were not there yet, but after, we played in Queen’s (2021).

“He’s playing great. He’s serving great, and hitting very, very strong. Hopefully it’s going to be a good match.”

Sinner, the current Australian Open holder, was helped by nearly 60 unforced Medvedev errors while committing 38 himself.

“We played in Australia this year and then London. We knew it was going to be very physical. It was strange the first two sets because whoever made the first break then started to roll.”

Sinner improved to 6-7 against Medvedev in their career series after losing their first six matches.

Sinner is the third Italian man to play a New York semi-final (Open era) after Corrado Barazzutti in 1977 and Matteo Berrettini in 2019 and has won his last nine matches.
