Wimbledon 2025 Men’s Day 9
Carlos Alcaraz needed barely 90 minutes to mow down the last British Wimbledon hope, with the two-time defending champion crushing Cam Norrie 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 on Tuesday to return to the semis.
The Spanish second seed was untouchable against an outclassed Norrie and moved to a Friday match against fifth seed Taylor Fritz, a 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4) winner over Karen Khachanov.
Alcaraz has yet to lose a set against Fritz after a pair of matches and extended his Tour win streak to 23 victories in a row.
Alcaraz lost lost here in 2022.
“It’s special to play another match at Wimbledon.” the Spanish winner said. “I want to go as far as I can here.
“I gave myself a chance to play another semi-final.”
Alcaraz sent over 13 aces and broke Norrie five times in what turned into a rout for the last of the home hopes.
The seed is looking forward to his meeting with Fritz but will relax on one of his two days off by playing his second-favourite sport, golf. “We will pay with my team so I can take my mind off the tennis.”
Alcaraz and Fritz a ve never played on grass, but the American is riding a run of form with two June titles and his Wimbledon semi on the lawns.
“He’s playing great,” Alcaraz said. “Grass season for him has been so successful.
“But I’ll be ready for him; I’ll try to play similar to today.”
Fritz said his match with Khachanov turned on a dime – and not in his favour – after he swept the first two sets.
From cruise control, the fifth seed sunk to despair, dropping the third set in a stunner but recovering to finish the win with a tiebreaker to wrap up victory after two and a half hours in the fourth, firing 16 aces.
“I’ve never had a match change so drastically, flip so quickly,” Fritz said after reaching the final four. “I started making a tonne of mistakes.
“Before, I felt I could not lose. I had to fight to get the match back to neutral.”
Fritz ended with 16 aces after losing his previous two Wimbledon quarter-finals.
He called the accomplishment “an amazing feeling.”
“I’ve really turned my career around over the past four years.”
He will play his second semi at a Grand Slam after the US Open 10 months ago. Fritz is the third active American to reach multiple Grand Slam semifinals, after Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton.
