Mirra Andreeva set a Wimbledon personal best with a move into the quarter-finals thanks to a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Emma Navarro on Monday.
But the teenaged talent confessed she was rattled when she noticed eight-time tournament winner Roger Federer and wife Mirka in the Royal Box during the fourth-round victory.
“I tried not to look, as I knew I would lose focus. But I saw Roger (at 4-1 in the second set) and I did,” she said of her dropped service game,
“It means a lot that you came and watched my match. It’s my dream to see you in real life… and Mirka looks very pretty,” she added.
Andreeva added: “I got really, really nervous before this match, but I’m happy I played focused.
“I kept telling myself that I was down in the score and that helped – but I probably forgot when it was match point. If I’d know I would have been three times more nervous,” she said after the 75-minute win.
The seventh seed playing here for the third time at age 18, was ruthless as she demolished 10th-seeded American Navarro to become the youngest into the last eight here Nicole Vaidisova in 2007.
The last time a teen got this far at Wimbledon was Victoria Azarenka and Sabine Lisicki in 2009. The French-based Andreeva also reached the quarters at Roland Garros last month and last season.
Belinda Bencic, who became a mother 15 months ago, broke through for her first quarter-final here with a tight 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Ekaterina Alexandrova.
The No. 35 Swiss who reached fourth in the world, needed six match points to achieve her career best at Wimbledon on her ninth visit.
“There were difficult moments trying to serve it out. My body was not listening to what my mind was saying.
“There was some crazy stress out there, I’m glad I was able to break her in the end.”
Bencic lost to Alexandrova barely a fortnight ago on grass in Germany and was relieved after her revenge win.
“I always got stuck in the fourth round. It was so important for me today to be able to break through to the quarter-finals.”
Liudmila Samsonova will play former No. 1 Iga Swiatek after dispatching Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain 7-5, 7-5. Swiatek was an easy winner over Dane Clara Tauson 6-4, 6-1.
