Wimbledon Men’s Day 9
Jannik Sinner experienced a brief medical swoon on Tuesday as the top seed lost a four-hour battle with Daniil Medvedev 6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3 to reach the semi-finals at Wimbledon.
The world No. 1 had to leave the court for 11 minutes early in the third set after two hours of pay, with the BBC reporting that his blood pressure and pulse were checked.
But the Italian got back into a re-match of January’s Australian Open final which he won in five sets over Medvedev, threatening with set points in the third set before finally going down at the last hurdle of the five-setter.
Fifth seed Medvedev returned to the Wimbledon final four in a repeat of his showing here a year ago; he has been this far nine times at the majors.
“I knew if I wanted to beat Jannik it would be a tough match,” the winner said.
“I could see he was not feeling good but this went away and he played better.
“I tried to stay at a high level. For me, it was great points, great match. I’m happy to win and I’m happy with my game. I’m looking forward
The winner said that he could never count Sinner out, even with his health scare.
“He can start moving well from one moment to the next. It’s tricky because you want to make him suffer – in a good way – by making him play more points.
“But he can also then start to run and shift to full power. Thankfully, everything ended well for me.”
Medvedev will clash for a spot in the Sunday final when he plays defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who recovered after losing the opening set to overhaul Tommy Paul 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
The Spaniard seeded third ended a nine-match win streak for his American opponent, champion last month on the grass of Queen’s Club.
“Today was a really difficult match for me, Tommy has been playing great on grass,” Alcaraz said.
“After I lost the first set I had to stay strong mentally, I knew this was a long journey, I had to hang in there.
“I was happy to find the solution in the end, I have to believe in myself all the time.”
