Zhang zaps Medvedev in German upset
Frustrated Daniil Medvedev swung his racquet fiercely, grazing the precious Halle Centre Court grass on Wednesday after taking a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (5) loss to Zhang Zhizhen.
The Chinese winner eliminated the third seed in just over two hours to reach the quarter-finals, becoming the first from his nation to get that far here on the pre-Wimbledon grass.
The 2022 tournament runner-up was unable to close out victory as Zhang rallied to come through on his first match point as Medvedev put a forehand long.
The pair combined for 25 aces, with No. 42 Zhang firing 39 winners.
He will aim for the semis against Christopher Eubanks, who eliminated holder Alexander Bublik 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3
“It was a really tough match,” Zhang said. “I’m happy I held up at the end.
“I was not thinking too much in the tiebreak, just going point by point. I was feeling more confident at the end.”
Zhang, 27, reached the eighth ATP quarter-final of his career and second on grass after Eastbourne a year ago.
