Zverev advances as Cerundolo can’t go on
Alexander Zverev booked his spot in the Toronto Masters last eight with a 6-4, 1-0 defeat of hampered opponent Francisco Cerundolo on Saturday.
The German top seed who won the title in2017, was on court for less than an hour as his Argentine opponent and good off-court friend had to quit due to an existing abdominal muscle injury.
Zverev moved into a quarter-final clash with defending champion Alexei Popyrin, who defeated Holger Rune in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 comeback effort.
Zverev was touched by Cerundolo’s situation during their match and had kind words at the net for an opponent who had defeated him in three separate meetings.
“I know about abdominal injuries. You can’t serve or accelerate on the forehand.
“But they can last from a few days to a few months. I have respect for him – he beat me three times before tonight.”
Australian Popyrin profited from nearly 40 unforced errors from Rune, who has taken on Andre Agassi as an advisor.
“This win means a lot,” the Aussie said. “I started the week not high on confidence but I knew my game was there. I just let go of the pressure and it worked out for me.”
Popyrin was annoyed after dropping the opening set. “I was pissed but when I came out to return I felt more in control of the match.”
Popyrin is bidding to become the first player since Rafael Nadal (2018-2019) to back up a title in Canada.
