Zverev constructs late comeback to shock Shelton
Alexander Zverev escaped late danger with a fighting comeback to defeat Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (6) on Sunday, spoiling the American’s debut at the ATP Finals in Turin.
Two-time champion Zverev rallied from 0-4 down in the second-set tiebreaker and saved three set points before winning his opening group match at the end-of-year series on his first match point after 93 minutes.
The German ranked third in the world never faced a break point as he schooled lefty Shelton in northern Italy, winning the last five points.
“He’s unbelievably aggressive, probably one of the most aggressive on the Tour” the winner said. “He had an amazing start in the tiebreaker.
“I had to control what I could control, I did things well. When I get his returns back and get into the rally I know I can do something.
“I’m super happy with this one.”
The year-end champion in 2018 (London) and 2021 (Turin) defeated Shelton for the fifth time without a loss in their series.
