Zverev gets the word on his tennis from Nadal clan
Alexander Zverev has launched his charm offensive with the Nadal tennis clan in hopes of perhaps persuading Toni Nadal to join his coaching team.
the world No. 3 is paying as top seed at the Toronto Masters which began on Sunday, with ATP Nos. 1 and 2 Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz both skipping the Canadian date which starts just a fortnight after their Wimbledon final
Zverev is still nursing the wounds from his first-round Wimbledon exit a month ago. The German skipped the Gstaad clay event and instead travelled to the Nadal’s home island of Mallorca, venue for their elite tennis camp.
The success of the Zverev campaign has yet to yield definitive results.
“(Toni’s) a great coach, no question about that, but he’s a personality that I think can give you confidence as well,” the German said.
“When he speaks and when Rafa speaks, you listen. He gave me some great insight of what it is actually like to play against
“He saw me as a player, he sees me now as a spectator. It was very helpful. We spent hours and hours talking, sometimes past midnight at some dinners.”
Zverev won the Canadian tiel eight years ago and has always been coached by his father.
The jury is still out aout what role – if any – Toni Ndal miht be able to play with Team Zed,
“I’m trying to convince him to do more weeks with me, and we’ll see how it goes, but he’s a very busy man,” the player said..
“I’m not sure how much of him you’ll see this year, because he gave his word to a lot of events. But we’re talking about what a potential partnership could look like, for sure.”
