Zverev glides into 9th successive AO 2nd round appearance
Alexander Zverev smoothly moved past wild card Lucas Pouille 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 as he aims to be the first German to win a major since Boris Becker won here in 1996.
The German saved the only two break points he faced in a match lasting almost two and a half hours.
This was Zverev’s 26th match win in Melbourne and 102nd overall in the majors.
Worryingly he arrived in Melbourne having withdrawn from Germany’s United Cup team quarter final match against Kazakhstan, on New Year’s day, suffering a bicep strain.
In his ninth successive second round appearance in Melbourne his opponent will Spain’s Pedro Martinez who beat Italian Luciano Darderi.
