Alex de Minaur tightened his grip on a spot in the ATP Finals on Wednesday, with the Australian reaching the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals 7-5, 6-2 over Nuno Borges

De Minaur currently stands on provisional seventh for a spot in the eight-man year-ender starting November 9. he completed his 50th win of the season as he dismissed Portugal’s Borges.He finished with19 winners, holding his unforced errors to just 10 in a victory in one and three-quarter hours.

“I’m hoping for many more to finish off the year and not stay at 50 (wins).” de Minaur said. “It’s been a successful trip to Asia so far.

“I told myself at the start of the week that it was all going to be a big mental effort to go out there and compete. I’m happy to be in the quarter-finals and give myself another opportunity.”
