Jannik Sinner has been told to stay off court until September 6 to allow his injured left knee to heal.

The strict doctor’s orders complicate the comeback plans for the world No. 1 who is missing the US Open and has not competed since winning Wimbledon more than six weeks ago.

While his top status is not in any any immediate danger the medical timeout might not allow the Italian to play the ATP Beijing event from September 30.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Sinner drove himself this week from Monaco to a clinic in Milan where he got the hard word from specialists.

The knee problem is reported as inflammation without signs of a tear, meaning his training days will be delayed.

Sinner is hoping to make it to the start of Beijing which is followed by the Shanghai Masters.

The 25-year-old apparently re-injured the knee during training sessions in late July.

World No. 2 Jannik Sinner became the youngest man to complete the full set of hard-court victories by beating Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (8) 7-6 (7) in the searing heat of Indian Wells.

The 24 year old Italian, didn’t face a break point during the final nor did he drop a set on his way to claiming his first title of the year and his 25th overall.

Sinner has won both hard court Grand Slams, with victories at the Australian Open in 2024 and 2025 and at the US Open in 2024.

In addition he has lifted all six Masters 1000 series hard court titles – adding the Indian Wells title to victories in Miami, Toronto, Cincinnati, Shanghai and Paris plus the season-ending ATP Finals.

Only Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have achieved the same feat.

Jannik Sinner convincingly fought off the big game of Ben Shelton to humble the American 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday, taking his place in a third consecutive semi-final at the Australian Open.

The winner of the previous two editions in Melbourne will face Novak Djokovic after winning their last five meetings. The pair will be playing in the final four of a Grand Slam for a fourth time.

The 38-year-old Serb  booked his spot as quarter-finals after opponent Lorenzo Musetti had to quit injured after winning the first two sets of their match.

“These are the moments you practice for,” Sinner said. “If you want to win you have to play against the best/

“Playing these kinds of matches improves you as a player and a person. Novak is playing incredible tennis for his age (38). Hopefully it will be a great battle out there.”

World No. 2 Sinner continued his career domination of Shelton. winning their last eight matches in straight sets.

The Italian from the German-speaking north has not lost to either an American or a left hander since Shelton beat him at 2023 Shanghai.

 Sinner will be competing in his sixth consecutive major semi-final when he takes on 24-time Grand Slam singles champion Djokovic.
